TESTING FOR HYPOTHETICAL BIAS IN CONTINGENT VALUATION USING A LATENT CHOICE MULTINOMIAL LOGIT MODEL by

چکیده
The most persistently troubling empirical result in the contingent valuation method literature is the tendency for hypothetical willingness to pay to overestimate real willingness to pay. We suggest a new approach to test and correct for hypothetical bias using a latent choice multinomial logit (LCMNL) model. To develop this model, we extend Dempster, Laird, and Rubin’s (1977) work on the EM algorithm to the estimation of a multinomial logit model with missing information on categorical membership. Using data on both the quality of water in the Catawba River in North Carolina and the preservation of Saginaw wetlands in Michigan, we find two types of “yes” responders in both data sets. We suggest that one set of yes responses are yeasayers who suffer from hypothetical bias and answer yes to the hypothetical question but would not pay the bid amount if it were real. The second group does not suffer from hypothetical bias and would pay the bid amount if it were real.

Overcoming Hypothetical Bias in Dichotomous Choice Contingent Valuation Studies: Some Preliminary Results
Contingent Valuation studies, in which respondents are presented with a hypothetical choice, can be prone to hypothetical bias as respondents could overstate their willingness to pay. The purpose of this paper is to present a method to detect hypothetical bias in the single bound dichotomous choice model. The method borrows the tools from the stochastic frontier model, as in the case of Hofler ...
متن کاملChoice modelling: assessing the environmental values of water supply options
Three criticisms of the contingent valuation method (CVM) are considered in this article. One technique that would appear to answer such criticisms is choice modelling (CM). CM permits value estimates for di¡erent goods sharing a common set of attributes to be pieced together using the results of a single multinomial (conditional) logit model. The CM approach to environmental value assessment i...
متن کاملOn Rank-Ordered Nested Multinomial Logit Model and D-Optimal Design for this Model
In contrast to the classical discrete choice experiment, the respondent in a rank-order discrete choice experiment, is asked to rank a number of alternatives instead of the preferred one. In this paper, we study the information matrix of a rank order nested multinomial logit model (RO.NMNL) and introduce local D-optimality criterion, then we obtain Locally D-optimal design for RO.NMNL models in...
متن کاملHypothetical Bias in Dichotomous Choice Contingent Valuation Studies
This paper uses a meta-analysis to explore the relationship between hypothetical bias and the price respondents are asked to pay. For public goods, the results clearly indicate a difference in the price elasticity between hypothetical and actual payment conditions. Since the bias increases for larger dollar amounts, any simple guidelines, such as NOAA’s “divide by two” rule of thumb, could be m...

The quality of the coastal waters is now a major environmental issue in Tobago due to its role in supporting the economically important tourism sector and for safeguarding public health. In this paper we report the results of two choice experiments designed to estimate willingness to pay (WTP) for an improvement in coastal water quality for two groups of beach recreationists: snorkellers and no...
